Prices Commission good, but should save more money than it costs

Senator Tammy Tyrrell agrees with the Greens policy for a Prices Commission to hold the major supermarkets to account.

However Senator Tyrrell says a Prices Commission should sit within the ACCC, not be an entirely new organisation. It means there would be a dedicated body to investigate supermarket pricing but not completely reinvent the wheel.

“There’s a fascination with setting up new government bodies that costs hundreds of millions of dollars to establish and maintain. We have enough of those already. I want a Prices Commission that’ll save taxpayers more money than it’ll cost them to run.”

When it comes to supermarket prices, Senator Tyrrell has a clear goal to help Tasmanians with the cost of living.

“Tassie needs ALDI. We’re being hit at the hip pocket because Tassie doesn’t have as many supermarket choices as the rest of the country.

“Evidence shows that when ALDI comes to town, prices at other supermarkets go down. Tasmania deserves what every other state has.”

Almost 2000 people have signed Senator Tyrrell’s petition to bring ALDI to Tasmania so far.

Senator Tyrrell also backs calls for the Treasurer to immediately publish the ACCC’s supermarket inquiry final report.
